One thing that comes out of myth is that at the bottom of the abyss comes the voice of salvation. The black moment is the moment when the real message of transformation is going to come. At the darkest moment comes the light.
I love this quotation from Joseph Campbell because it reminds us, beautifully, of two keys to personal growth: that darkness serves a purpose in our lives and that, if we surrender to that purpose – rather than succumbing to the darkness – we will grow.
When you find yourself in what feels like the bottom of the abyss, think back on this quote. Perhaps it will help you look around for the light. And, when your world is filled with joy and light, don’t forget what you had to pass through to get there. Remembering will help you connect with others.
